Mohandas Gandi was born in a small seaside town on the West Coast of India in 1869, a decade after the British Raj assumed direct rule over India. He would spend most of his life leading the Indian Independence Movement against the British colonizers.
First a lawyer in South Africa, then a social activist, then an independence leader, and always a proponent of nonviolent resistance, Gandhi is considered the father of modern India. His countrymen saw him as the Mahatma—the Great Soul.
In 1947, British India split into two new, independent nations: the Hindu-majority India and the Muslim-majority Pakistan. The division was chaotic, with Hindus in Pakistan moving to India, and Muslims in India moving to Pakistan. Gandhi spent his time easing tensions between the two sides. On January 30, 1948, he was assassinated—shot dead by a militant Hindu nationalist. He was 78.
This set contains five Indian banknotes featuring the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi.
