Step back over 2,000 years and hold a coin from the time of Jesus. The Widow’s Mite, known to scholars as the lepton or prutah, was the smallest bronze coin in circulation in ancient Judea. Minted during the reign of Alexander Jannaeus (103–76 BC) of the Hasmonean Dynasty, these coins continued in use during the early 1st century AD—making them likely the type referenced by Jesus in the New Testament.
In the Gospel of Mark 12:41–44 and Luke 21:1–4, Jesus praises a poor widow for giving two mites, explaining that she gave more than all others because she gave all she had. This tiny coin stands as a timeless symbol of sacrificial giving and unwavering faith.
